TL;DR
You can launch a digital map product within 24h by following these steps:
  1. Pick your expert niche: the intersection of value, expertise and demand.
  2. Create your MLP: Minimum Lovable Product, much smaller than you think!
  3. Launch frequently & grow with feedback

Pick your expert niche!
A successful digital map product begins with picking an expert niche. This step is crucial as it sets the foundation for your product. Why pick a niche you ask? Audiences value expertise and quality - as the saying goes "it's better to be a master of one trade than a jack of all trades, i.e., a master of none".

Your master plan
  1. Identify your provable areas of expertise ("Been covering this [topic/region/...] for 5+ years")
  2. Pick a starting niche ("Berlin + house boats")
  3. Dominate that niche ("De-facto authority on house boat tours in Berlin & Mecklenburg")
  4. Widen it ("Now also covering the North Sea")

Example niches to inspire you
  • South Tyrol + hiking + photography (= RoterRucksack)
  • Berlin + house boats (= Seenland)
  • Mediterranean + diving spots + holidays
  • Florida + family + seasons
  • Biking + Switzerland + family
  • Equestrian + Alps + Tours

Discovering your niche
Consider what partners hire you for, analyze which content performs best in your analytics, and ask your audience directly. Engaging with your audience will provide valuable insights into what products will be most successful.

❗ Solve real-world problems
Ask yourself what questions cause the biggest pain point for your audiences and then provide the cure.

  • "I'm spending $1000 on this house boat, where do I go with it to make the most of it? Which harbors are worth visiting? How do I know where to anchor?" (= Seenland)
  • "I've seen so many stunning Meran photos. Where and how can I create the most epic photos if I only have a week in spring?" (= RoterRucksack)
  • "How can I plan a couple's romantic getaway in wine region [XYZ]? For a weekend/ week/ vacation?"

In doing so, aspire to create something lovable beyond its basic functionality - add in a harbor map, offer drone video previews, rank the vineyards by wine tour availability, features and value-for-money.

Start small, think big!
Forget the bulky requirements of the traditional print process. Your digital product is a living, breathing experience whose value grows with each new entry.

Kick things off with a few well-crafted tours, bike adventures, or weekend getaways. Then fine-tune your offerings based on what your users use and love, gradually boosting your product's value and what you can charge for it.
